No sitting!

Last night was a launch party for Green Planet, a designer landscaping company. It was sponsored by a local glossy, Home and Design.

The location was in a business complex - but outdoors. They had installed Astroturf and a white picket fence to give off an al fresco feel. An electric string quartet was playing classical versions of disco and glam rock tunes on their awesomely spare instruments.

And yet...

Everyone there knew someone. I knew no one. And it was nearly impossible to socialize because - dun dun dun - there were tables and chairs in the middle of the makeshift patio. How do you approach people when they are sitting without seeming ludicrously brazen and rude? The answer - you can't!

Keep this in mind if ever you plan a cocktail party - no sitting!
